Wealth. Why?
by Pam O’Hara

Wealth. Why?

To buy.

Happiness. Home. Hope.

Someone to protect me from the rope.

From the fall. From myself.

Deliver joy to my doorstep same-day.

To my home.

A home away from need.

Away from the greed of those in need.

I need success for mine, not thine.

Not this time.

Let them eat peanut butter cups.

Before I SNAP them up.

My cup runneth over.

And over.

And over.

And over time I will have more.

Because wealth compounds. Confounds. On demand.

“Hope be dammed,” fear commands.

What wrought this rot?
Why not?

Note from the author:
I was intrigued by Joe Hill, an immigrant laborer turned songwriter, speaking to me from the last robber baron era, and was inspired to answer him from mine. I’m sorry that our democratic system hasn’t made better progress with wealth distribution, and wanted to explore why.
